BOREALIS HIRING A JUNIOR IN-HOUSE LEGAL COUNSEL
(INTERNSHIP OR EXPERIENCED ROLE)

Job Title: Renewable Energy In-House Legal Counsel

Borealis Geopower Inc., focused on developing high temperature geothermal projects throughout western Canada, is seeking an experienced, Calgary based lawyer with a strong understanding of the Canadian energy (conventional or renewable) or mining industries with experience in litigation and corporate law. Geothermal energy projects follow similar practices to other sub-surface and renewable natural resources. Because of this, the role is ideal for a candidate with legal experience in the oil and gas or mining sector who is looking to transition to the clean-tech sector.

Work Term: 1-year internship leading to part-time or full-time employment ​

Job Description:
  • Draft, review and negotiate a wide variety of commercial contracts, including non-disclosure agreements, customer and supplier contracts, and contractor and employer agreements.
  • Develop new policies and manage existing internal policies.
  • Assist with corporate business plans. 
  • Assist with regulatory applications.
  • Advise on and draft documents related to equity & debt financing activities.
  • Managing disputes and litigation files in coordination with internal stakeholders and external counsel.
  • Meet internal and external reporting requirements.
  • Act as corporate secretary and prepare documents for shareholder and director meetings.
  • Provide legal advice to various internal stakeholders including geologists, accountants, and management.
 
​The ideal candidate will possess the following qualifications and skills:

  • Law degree from a recognized institution and membership in good standing with the Alberta bar.
  • 2-4 years of experience in Canadian energy or mining sector.
  • Experience with utilities and First Nations is considered an asset.
  • Very strong attention to detail. 
  • An enthusiastic team player who will work well with others in a fast-paced environment.
  • Ability to provide sound business and legal advice to all levels of the company.

  • A post-secondary graduate.
  • 30 years of age or less.
  • A Canadian citizen, permanent resident of Canada, or granted refugee status in Canada.
  • Legally entitled to work according to the relevant provincial legislation and regulations.
  • Not in receipt of a government wage assistance program within the past year.
Only applicants that meet the intern eligibility requirements and are willing to accept an intern’s salary will be considered for the intern role. The internship is for 12 months.


Borealis GeoPower is headquartered in Moh’kins’tsis, the Niitsitapi (Blackfoot) name for the place we now call Calgary, located in the Treaty 7 region and the traditional territories of the Blackfoot Confederacy (including the Siksika, Piikani and Kainai First Nations), the Tsuut’ina First Nation, and the Stoney Nakoda (including the Chiniki, Bearspaw and Wesley First Nations). BOREALIS GEOPOWER has operations on the traditional, unceded territory of the people of the kitselas First Nation. the kitselas people are part of the larger tsimshian nation whose traditional language is sm'algyax. kitselas means "people of the canyon" in sm'algyax. the kitselas First Nation has been archaeologically documented to occupy the kitselas canyon, east of terrace (british columbia) on the skeena river, for at least 5000 years.
