Community Workshop Development “Geothermal 101”

After a recent RFP (Request for Proposal) from the Canadian Geothermal Energy Association, Borealis Geopower won the contract to develop and present a geothermal energy workshop for communities. The goal of the workshop is to inform communities about geothermal energy as a renewable energy resource, the process of resource development and the implications for the community. The workshop was designed for introductory audiences as a “Geothermal 101” one day course and presenters would give a full overview of geothermal energy development as it affects local communities. Topics include “Introduction to Geothermal Energy,” “Exploration and Development,” “The Business of Geothermal” and “Community Impacts.”

On June 25, 2009, the community of Terrace, BC hosted the first “Geothermal 101” Workshop: Terrace_Workshop_Invite.pdf
Borealis GeoPower’s Craig Dunn presented the bulk of the material on behalf of CanGEA and was well received by the 60 plus members of the local community and interested parties. Thanks to the other presenters including Garth Thoroughgood with BC Minstry of Energy Mines and Petroleum Resources discussing permitting, leasing and regulations involved with geothermal energy resource development and Stuart Connacher with BC Transmission Corporation (BCTC) discussing the state of electricity and transmission infrastructure in the Lakelse Lake Area. A special thanks to our gracious hosts KT Industrial Development Society and Northwest Science & Innovation and the other supporting organizations including the City of Terrace, City of Kitimat and the Regional District of Kitimat-Stikine.

Borealis GeoPower’s Craig Dunn will also have the opportunity to present the workshop to community leaders in Ft. Simpson, Northwest Territories on September 29th, 2009.  Special thanks to our hosts and sponsors for the event: Northwest Territories Energy and Natural Resources.

Full credit to all community leaders with the vision to bring in CanGEA’s geothermal energy workshop. The material presented allows their communities to learn more about the possibilities and opportunities associated with high-temperature geothermal energy development.
